Chiropractic Adjustments- A quickly applied, controlled force delivered to a joint of a body, which is designed to restore the normal motion of that joint. Lack of motion can cause pain and tingling around the joint as well as in other parts of the body. Active Release Technique- A patented and trademarked soft tissue management system, which is non-surgical. ART is performed by the doctor using his thumb or fingers to put tension on a muscle or tendon while the patient moves the body part through a specific motion. The purpose of ART is to improve relative motion between different layers of tissue in the body, which become stuck together when injured or irritated. Muscle Energy Technique- A specific stretching technique which involves a series of stretch and contract periods. This technique is hands-on and directed by the doctor. The purpose of MET is to increase the resting length of the muscle (which can become shortened by injury and irritation) by resetting what the nervous system thinks is normal. Therapeutic Exercise- A combination of static stretches and strengthening exercises that are either performed in the office, at home or a combination of both. The purpose of these exercises is to create muscular balance by stretching tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles as well as improving balance or what we call proprioception. Intersegmental Traction (IST) - A table which has a roller wheel which travels up and down your spine producing motion in the spinal joints. IST helps improve spinal motion and generally feels good. New patients are currently being accepted
Arthrostim- A percussion device which vibrates at a fast rate and who's depth can be controlled by the doctor. This is a great alternative to manipulation for people who either don't like the "popping" that goes along with a typical manipulation or who are not a good candidate for manipulation. The Arthrostim is also good for treating stubborn trigger points by stimulating various nerve endings in the muscles and mobilizing ribs.
Gua Sha- An old Chinese treatment which involves scraping a plastic device across an area of the skin. This treatment helps to increase circulation in the area and also helps to improve tissue texture. This treatment is always performed in conjunction with Muscle Energy Technique and seems especially helpful in treating various types of Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis.
Kinesiotaping- This is a special type of tape which provides gentle support for underlying tissues and also improves lymphatic drainage. If you watched the 2008 Summer Olympics you likely saw a number of participants sporting the colorful tape, most notably in beach volleyball.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation- An elelectrical device which sends a small electrical current into an area of the body which has pain and swelling. This device is primarily useful for reducing pain and swelling but can also help reduce muscle spasms.
This is a list of the treatment modalities that we utilize in our office. We will choose what we feel is the best combination of modalities for you and your particular condition on each visit. Sometimes, as treatment progresses, we will add or eliminate a modality from your treatment. This decision is always based upon what we feel is most appropriate for you during that particular visit.
